Scouts Honor
This is an expository paper about a book called Scouts Honor by Avi. The book is about a boy that becomes a scout to become tougher. The story takes place in 1946. The boy lives in Brooklyn. His friends are nicknamed Horse and Max. Horse is skinny Max is chubby. Max also has money in his pocket. His scoutmaster's name is Mr. Brenkman. This is found on page 55. His rank is a Tenderfoot. He wants to become a senior so he goes to the Palisades to earn the badge and become a senior scout. The Palisades is a country place. In this paper we will talk about the main events, literary devices, characters, the setting, and symbols. In this story, Scout’s Honor one of the main symbols is the Scout Badges, which in the story symbolizes, Toughness. The main settings were the subway, 5 different subway stations, Brooklyn, New York, Jersey, and the woods in Jersey in 1946. The subway is important because that is how the characters got to were they were going to camp. The subway stations are also important because that is how the narrator and his friends got on the subway. Brooklyn, New York is important since that is were the main character and his friends live. Jersey is important because they traveled there to get to the woods. The woods in Jersey is one of th e most important places because that is were the boys go to prove they are tough by camping there. All of these places were visited by the characters in 1946. There are several characters in the book scouts honor by Avi. There aren't really any secondary characters. There are three characters reffered to in the book and they travel through the story, they also provide most of the dialouge. Also there is the scout master Mr. Brinkman. He is mostly mentioned through the story but does have one speaking scene with the narrator. The narrator is the main character in the story. He is only known as the narrator and his real name is never mentioned in the story. He is a character who isn't though at all but he wants to be tough because his two friends are tough. he is constantly trying to seem tough when he is around his friends but it is very hard to do and he decides that he wants to really show that he is tough and not that he is pretending anymore. His two friends max and horse join to. max is a chubby kid that always has pocket money and is tougher than the narrator but not tougher than horse. Horse is a small skinny but he is the toughest person of the three.
In this paragraph I will be telling you about some of the literary devices in this story. There are many literary devices in this story that many people simply think of as a few words but the literary devices are very important to the story. For example, the narrator said that the subway map looked like a noodle factory hit by a bomb. That gives you an idea of how crazy and jumbled the map looked to him. Another example, isn’t that a zillion miles from here? This again gives you a very good idea of how far the narrator thought the country was from New York. Whenever you read the story make sure you listen for the literary devices. There are many events that happen in this book. The first thing was that the narrator went to go sign up for boy scouts and became a tender foot. He did this because he thought that he wasn’t tough and he thought that this would make him tougher. Then he went to talk to his scout master to know where he could find “country.” Then his scout master told him that he could find country in New Jersey. Then he went to talk to his friends horse and max. They were fussing over who was the toughest and who would make it the longest in the “country.” So they all decided that they were going to go to the “country” together. So they left. Then they were on the train and ended up leaving max on the subway but they stayed off, so they had to meet back up. Then they had to cross a bridge and it was rocking back and forth, back and forth, but they got over it. Then they got to the “country” and it was trashed from people. There was trash every where. Then they built a lean to and tried to make a fire. The fire didn’t work to well though and neither did the lean to. So they finally agreed to leave. They got on the train and left. When they got home they start fussing over who is tougher than them and they all are fussing that everyone else is tougher than them. Then all the boys realize that they like New York and the world around them way better than “country”!!!!!!
